Today, the islands are popular both as a tax haven (as there are virtually no taxes levied on residents or visitors) and as a holiday destination. Like much of the Caribbean, it enjoys a warm, tropical climate, and has miles of beautiful beaches.
You can also visit a castle – albeit not the kind of castle you’d imagine in Europe. Pedro St. James Castle is actually a reconstructed late-1700s-era plantation owner’s estate, located on Grand Cayman in Savannah.
SCUBA DIVING AND SNORKELLING
Some of the most popular things to do in the Caymans, aside from lounging on the beach, are scuba diving and snorkelling.
There are places (especially Stingray City, Grand Cayman) where you can dive or snorkel with stingrays, and many shipwrecks off the coast that are fun to dive.
While you can’t take anything with you from these shipwrecks (some were done intentionally to help spawn new reefs), there are truly a mind-boggling array of different species who inhabit them, well worth a dive.
Above water, the Cayman Turtle Centre: Wildlife Encounter offers some unique and educational experiences with turtles.
Hiking is another popular outdoor activity on the Cayman Islands. In particular, the Mastic Trail is the place to be, a forested trail through the centre of Grand Cayman.
There are hiking trails of varying difficulty that can be found on the smaller two islands, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, as well.
You can also stroll through the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park on Grand Cayman, to see some of the many flora and fauna of the country, including many endangered or threatened species.
DEEP SEA FISHING
Back out on the water, deep-sea fishing is also an extremely popular active holiday sport in the region. Various species of deep-sea fish can be found, and chartered boat tours (including those that offer instruction to novice fisher folk) are readily available from many of the island ports.
There are also numerous festivals throughout the year, along with sporting and music events, so be sure to plan ahead!
