Costa Rica is the most-visited nation in Central America in terms of tourism, with around 3 million visitors annually. The unique mix of Caribbean coast, Pacific coast, and its own impressive geographic features provide many options for recreation and exploration. Ecotourism is extremely popular, and Costa Rica is home to a large range of features, including rainforest, volcanic mountains and peaks, beaches, and much more. There is a large quantity of animal and plant species in Costa Rica, and the government has taken significant steps to protect the environment.
Some of the most popular natural attractions include the Poas Volcano Crater – a lake atop a dormant (for now) volcano at nearly 9000 feet, surrounded by a national park that’s perfect for hiking, mountaineering, and other outdoor activities. Another popular outdoor destination is Cocos Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is kept devoid of inhabitants (other than park rangers) and offers pristine, natural beauty for ecotourism. There are several other national parks and wildlife preserves as well, including several additional World Heritage Sites.
Trekking, hiking, mountaineering, and flora/fauna watching are the main activities for active tourists. More extreme activities include bungee jumping, surfing, and rafting – Costa Rica contains many rivers perfect for rafting and kayaking, including the Celeste River, voted by residents as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Costa Rica. Of course, the beaches on both Pacific and Caribbean coasts offer many typical water-based activities, too, such as boating, snorkelling, diving, swimming, surfing, and more. It’s hard to believe in a relatively small country that you have 2 coasts, many rivers, rainforest, and volcanic mountain peaks over 2 miles high that you can visit, but that diversity and range is one of the appeals of Costa Rica.
