The original started in Swedish Lapland. In 1989, Swede Yngve Bergqvist built an igloo on the frozen banks of the River Torne. A few tourists asked to sleep in the igloo. Mr Bergqvist realised he could make a business out of this.
The world’s first Ice hotel was then built in 1990. It is now built every year and is the biggest Ice hotel, in the village of Jukkasjavi. Chairs and beds are constructed from snow and ice blocks. A bar is built, even the glasses are made from ice.
In March every year, ice is harvested from the river Torne and stored in a big warehouse for the following year. Each year Artists submit their ideas for the design of the rooms, reception, bar and halls. Fifty artists are selected. No two rooms are the same. Many weeks of planning, preparation and construction takes place. The hotel is then open December to April. In Spring it all melts and returns to the river Torne.
Beds are bedded with reindeer fur and guests sleep in Polar sleeping bags. There isn’t any heating, the temperature is kept at a constant -5 degrees Celsius. There is no plumbing, bathroom facilities are in a warm building nearby. Warm accommodation is available next to the hotel and a sauna and hot tub outdoors. There is also an ice chapel which is very popular for Ice weddings.
